Why Should I Use A Rice Cooker To Cook Rice?

The rice cooker is an efficient and time-saving kitchen appliance that cooks perfect rice every time. Many people have difficulty cooking rice on the stove because the burner cannot be turned down to a low enough simmer for the steaming portion of cooking rice. The result is rice that is scorched or burned. With a Zojirushi rice cooker, rice will be fluffy and delicious. Plus, you won’t have to stand over the stove while it cooks. Just set it and leave. All Zojirushi rice cookers have durable nonstick inner cooking pans for quick and easy cleaning.

How Is Rice Measured? What Does The Capacity Mean?

Every Zojirushi rice cooker comes with a plastic measuring cup. This cup has a capacity of 6-ounces, or about 3/4 of a U.S. measuring cup. The capacity of the rice cooker is counted in these 6-ounce cups of uncooked rice. One 6-ounce cup of raw rice makes about 3, 6-ounce cups of cooked rice. Do not confuse the rice cooker measuring cup with U.S. measuring cups; they are different. All Zojirushi rice cookers come with a special measuring cup and nonstick rice spatula for serving. The capacity of a rice cooker is stated in the numbers of 6-ounce cups of raw rice.

We have never owned a rice cooker; we''ve always just cooked rice on the stove. But our son is coming home from Bangkok with his Thai girlfriend, so we bought this one which is similar to theirs. Some reviewers say it spatters and bubbles through the hole in the lid, and makes a mess. We debated whether rinsing the rice was necessary. The directions say to, but our rice bag did not say to. I have never rinsed rice, but the Thai lady does. So we did an experiment. The rice we briefly rinsed and drained before cooking was perfect. The same high-quality Thai jasmine rice, unrinsed, caused spattering and spitting out of the hole in the lid. So, there you are.

The Best Rice Cooker for over 25 years!

UPDATE: It''s been 5 years with the new one...just as reliable and functional as the original. No changes to my original comments. I generally make only 2-4 cups of rice at a time. I''ve made up to 7 cups without the "splatter" described by others. Maybe if I made 9-10 cups it would, but you could cover the weep hole with a small cloth. I''d recommend buying the bigger size if you are concerned. Still very happy!

I purchased my first Zojirushi rice cooker over 25 years ago while stationed in Japan. The cooker worked unfailingly for over 25 years until this year. As I searched for a replacement - reviewing the multitude of complex rice cookers - I realized what I wanted was the same cooker I had. This is the model! I wanted it to cook rice correctly in an timely manner.
I''m not a rice connoisseur...the Japanese take it to an art form, so maybe the more complex machines result in a better dining experience. For me, this rice cooker delivers fluffy, perfect rice every time. I tend to cook about 3 cups (dry volume) rice each time. Add water, add rice, flip the lever to cook and in about 20-25 minutes I have great rice for dinner. If that''s what you need, then this is the product.
Differences from the original - interior is non-stick aluminum which is a huge improvement over the original bare aluminum. Rice doesn''t stick. There are markings in the "pot" to show where to fill the water - these are definitely harder to read with the non-stick coating. It''s a bit of a pain, but not a deal breaker. Lid is glass and has a small weep hole. I read that this hole spits and made a mess. This is NOT my experience at all. In fact, my old lid (light aluminum, no hole) occasionally caused a small mess. This does not.
I''ve had this product now for 3 months. It''s a simple cooker that works perfectly and exactly like the one I had for 25 years. Very, very happy.

Browsing on Amazon I realized I''ve had this rice cooker for 15 years! So I thought it deserved a review. I use it an average of once or twice a week, and have only used it to cook brown and white rice.

It does spurt and sputter, especially if you are making brown rice (probably due to additional "stuff" in the brown rice causing foamier bubbles, in addition to needing more water for brown rice). As long as the lid is seated properly (not floating on water or a stray rice grain), and you cover it with a towel (flour sack towel works great) when it''s cooking, it''s fine. But I am not a countertop neatnik. I definitely make sure the lid is seated properly, and cover it with a tea towel or kitchen towel. I almost never pre-soak my rice, even brown rice. If you want a spurt-free rice cooker, you need one of those with the hinged, latching lids, they have special gaskets and systems to manage the bubbling and overflow. The benefit of this simpler style is that it''s less bulky and easy to clean with warm water and a dish brush.

As for complaints about cooking quality, you really need to use water ratios from your rice packaging, not the generic ones that come with the rice cooker. For Japanese-style short or medium grain white or haiga (partially milled) rice (Nishiki, Botan Calrose, for example) I would use 1 cup rinsed rice : 1.25 cup water. (This is the 6 oz cup that comes with the cooker.) I also use a Japanese Kagayaki medium grain brown rice that does exceptionally well with just 1 cup rinsed rice : 2:25 cups water, and cooks up fine with no pre-soaking. I find brown rices to be more variable in their water needs, unfortunately; so YMMV.

I don''t like constantly plugging & unplugging things so I use a simple plug-in switch at the wall to shut it off. I found one at my local hardware store years ago, it''s similar to this GE Grounded On/Off Power Switch, Plug-In, White, Energy Efficient, Space Saving Design, UL Listed, 15A, 120VAC, 1800W, 25511 .

The biggest negative for the 1.2L model (the middle size, I think it holds 5-6 cups uncooked max) is that the bottom does seem too hot. Making just 1 cup (uncooked) rice tends to result in rice that''s dry and crunchy on the bottom. My typical batch is 2 cups raw rice at a time, and I find 2-3 cup batches work well. The bottom can get slightly brown, but if you turn it off within 30 minutes or so it doesn''t dry out too much. However, it''s definitely annoying, and is the one problem that has made me want to ever investigate a different rice cooker ever.

However, since this has proven to be a workhorse and reliably produces delicious rice for my purposes, I''m still giving it 5 stars.

I bought the basic, smallest rice cooker listed here after my old Rival rice cooker died. That one had been a gift and lasted for over 7 years, so I was pretty satisfied with it, and probably would have bought the same one if I could have found it. But I didn''t. I ended up choosing this one, despite being more expensive than other basic rice cookers because I have been very satisfied with other Zojirushi products, primarily the thermoses and carafes.
Wow! I was blown away!
I expected it to be pretty much the same as the old Rival one I had, since I was getting the basic version and the smallest size. But there is so much more detail put into this one. The bowl where you put the rice is much more solid and hefty. And the finish is smooth and obviously durable (though I''ve only used it a few times) compared to the one I had before. The cord is quite long, which was surprising as well, but very convenient. It also did come with the advertised accessories, though I didn''t need them. I measure my own rice/quinoa/etc. with regular measuring cups, and I have the old paddle still from the Rival rice cooker. I say this because I saw another reviewer mention that they did not receive the accessories on the basic model.
So far, I have cooked quinoa with turmeric and garam masala (something I eat regularly for breakfast) and wild rice in this new rice cooker. No problems. No liquid mess spouting out the tiny hole on the lid. No grains sticking to the bottom of the bowl -- in fact, it all slides out so fast and easy that one would expect the whole thing to be lined in oil. This also makes it a breeze to clean -- with nothing stuck to the bottom, you can easily remove all the grains into a container or plate, so that the bowl is completely empty. It also can go in the dishwasher (as could the old Rival), with no issues.
Overall, this feels more like a luxury sports model compared to the Rival I had before, despite getting the "Basic" model. Maybe there aren''t as many bells and whistles as the higher-level options, but there is no skimping in quality or functionality. Definitely worth the extra money compared to other "basic" rice cookers, and much better than I was expecting.

These reviews seem to be a mix of all 3 sizes. The 3-cup (smallest) does NOT have a keep warm setting or a steamer insert, and the cord doesn''t detach. It just makes great rice, especially if you have some experience with one of these simple pots. I got it to replace a National (Panasonic) from 1974 that still works! Thoroughly washing and pre-soaking the rice minimizes spitting out of the little hole in the lid. Zojirushi has excellent detailed instructions in the Recipes section of its website. Want perfect brown rice? Use 2 cups of rice (the included measuring cup, which is the Japanese standard cup = 3/4 US cup), rinse several times in a separate container, soak half an hour & drain, transfer rice to the pot, add water to the .4 liter line, cover, push the button and leave it alone. Don''t ever lift the lid, and let it sit for 15-20 minutes after it shuts off. The rice will be slightly sticky and not at all mushy - comes out just as good as the fuzzy logic model I got for my son, which automates the pre-soak stage and temperature setting.

Hi, I am Japanese and have used Zojirushi rice cockers for many many years.
I bought this small one for road trips.
Tried before trip and found it’s just perfect level for this price.
You should rinse rice about 4-5 times until water gets cleared and after cooking light turned off, you need stand for 15 minutes to make taste much better!
You can see a hole (should be more indeed but it’s fine) on rice in my picture. That shows you the rice can be tasted the best!!!

Shipped on time as per given. I really loved it! This rice cooker cooked my 3 cups and 4 cups rice in just about 15 or 20 mins time, much faster than my previous rice cooker. My previous rice cooker pot has T-fal non-stick coating, which it will start peeling after 1 year of using it. The inner pot of this doesn''t stick the rice once it cooked. I think it has a coating too but definitely not T-Fal non-stick coating. If you want a perfect cooked rice, here I want to share some tips with you, unplug once the rice is cooked, then let it sit in the pot for about 10 mins, then your rice will come out beautifully. Size is a bit small than I expected, but its okay. I highly recommend it to everyone.

Confession: I thought I knew had to make stove-top rice. I''ve been serving it to may family for years, no complaints. Same routine of rinsing, boiling, and steaming. But it was never perfect however I thought rice cookers were a gimmick. Recently our family have begun eating more meals with rice so I broke down and began researching high-quality (but inexpensive) small rice cookers. Zojirushi brand from Japan continued to pop up over and over with rave reviews. I''m SO glad to have purchased this model. It''s adorable. About the size of a volleyball and comes with scooper and paddle. So slick and simple I made a batch on the spot and it took 30 minutes. Came out perfectly fluffy, no water log, no ball of paste. Completely restaurant quality. Made about 6 portions in no time. You will love this rice cooker!
