Description

Product Description

Maternal Newborn Nursing Care Plans, Third Edition teaches students and practicing nurses how to assess, plan, provide, and evaluate care for pregnancy, delivery, recovery, abnormal conditions, and newborn care. Featuring more than 65 of the most common and high-risk care plans for nursing care using the nursing process approach, it includes NIC interventions, discussions on collaborative problems, key nursing activities, signs and symptoms, and diagnostic studies. Using a progressive approach, the text begins with generic care plans that address all patient situations regardless of the patient diagnosis or condition before moving on to more complicated and specific care plans. The Third Edition offers new rationales for nursing actions based on scientific principles, a new breastfeeding care plan added to the normal newborn care chapter, new information on obesity in pregnancy, evidence-based practice boxes throughout to highlight current research, and updated references and research. Also included are new guidelines, practice changes, new standards, and evidence changes. * Consistent organization based on commonly encountered nursing diagnoses * Comprehensive coverage of normal pregnancy and common complications of pregnancy * Individualized and collaborative care plans cover both actual and potential problems and conditions * Content in concert with the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) mandate to improve the quality and safety of patient outcomes

Update: contacted the publisher and they sent me out a different print copy that was much easier to read.

I can’t speak to the content of the book as I haven’t really had a chance to use it for school yet but the text is VERY difficult to see. I’m not sure if it’s a misprint or what, but it seems like certain bits of text that would normally be bolded or in a different color so they stand out are instead so light as to be almost unreadable. Going to contact the publisher or seller and see if I can get a better copy since it’s a required book for one of my classes.

This was a required book by my obstetrics class, and rather than buying it for an outrageous sum, I rented it. It was well worth it, buy or rent! It was easy to find the sections I needed, although I did have some trouble finding the "related to" criteria at times. The section would say refer to another section, then that section referred back to the one I just came from and it was confusing, which loses it a star. The maternal care plans consist of 90% of the book, but it covers prenatal, antenatal, and postnatal periods. For a standard nursing obstetric course, it does the job quite well! I had no problems writing my weekly care plans and I highly recommend this book for ease of doing so despite the difficulties I had.

As for my experience with this book and nursing school, it sucks. This book is such a pain in the ass compared to the nursing dx manual and other resources out there.

Good for mostly maternal CP’s

The care plans are ordered in a confusing way. Not many newborn care plans; mostly just maternal care plans. It does have reliable assessments, interventions and rationales though.

This book is fairly easy to use. I like the layout, but it is not as great when it comes to going over nursing interventions. It is extremely choppy and short. Before I purchased this book I looked high and low for a differnt care plan book more like the one I had purchased for nursing 101 class by Meg Gulanick and Judith Meyers, but alas! They have not published one! I finally settled on this Nursing Care plan book. This has helped me develop my own care plans for patients, but as I stated it is not as detailed as one would have hoped (when it came to rationales for each action or intervention and descriptions for the why you could choose this nanda diagnosis, and even separating out the types of interventions which mu NU 101 care plan book did). I do wish it were available for kindle, lugging yet another large book to clinicals was not pleasant. If you are looking for a care plan book for your OB class, this one is decent, but I am sure there are better more detailed care plans available online just by using google.

Although it is helpful in writing care plans, it will definitely NOT do all the work for you. It did save me a lot of time though. Worth the money (rental).
